30 trillion cells make you and I.
A lesser-known fact about the elephant which has 1000 trillion cells is that the elephant is among the small group of large and long-lived mammals that are resistant to cancer. In the words of evolutionary biologist Vincent Lynch- “Elephants are weird.” Unlike us humans, “Their cells just die if you give them DNA damage.” This study also finds that while we have just one tumour suppressor gene known as p53, the elephant has evolved to have twenty.
It is no surprise that a friend of the Elephant is a natural friend of the Cancerfund-Galle.
As the study shows, unless we understand basic biology, “there is no way to intervene when things go wrong.” The aims and hopes of the research are that studying the elephants’ cancer defence will lead to improved treatments and even path to prevention. To do just so means we need to protect the natural habitat of this wondrous beast. (Source: Maya Wei-Hass, The National Geographic, 14 August 2018.)
For the inaugural fundraising exhibition, Eco-Maximus is making 100 sketchbooks of unique design and donating all the proceeds to the Cancerfund-Galle.
