Galle Cancer Foundation

Nature as Therapy

We take advantage of the environs of Galle and organise walking and trekking as a group activity for therapeutic purposes. The appreciation of being outdoors/garden/jungle/field/by the sea and finding time to be in nature need not be a privilege. The therapeutic value of nature benefits both the physical and mental health of cancer patients and their carers alike.

Combining the physical aspect of walking and talking, or hiking as therapy makes it easier to rid, and deal with difficult emotions, particularly fear and anxiety.

As a newly diagnosed cancer patient, you may be worried about the treatment or the side effects. You may worry about your children; you may worry about your carers. You may worry about your job or the ability to do your work. And you may worry about money.

Walking alone/or with a therapist or in a group can make it easier to cope. Studies show Subgenual Prefrontal cortex, which is the part of the brain responsible for negative thoughts, is calmer when in nature, and when the mind is calmer, it is possible to process problems.

Joining a walking group of those who have lost loved ones can help you feel less alone. Talking can help manage the loss. Walking and talking can be freeing. A depressed person may not be motivated to do anything. Walking helps to motivate, and from a passive state of depression, it can get you into a more active mode. You can start to feel more in control of your cancer journey.

Please get in touch if  you would like to know more or join a walking group.
